Research On The Trump Administration's Taiwan Policy

The Taiwan question has always been at the heart of China-US relations.In 2016,the island underwent a major political change.The Democratic Progressive Party(DPP),in favor of "Taiwan Independence" forces,came to power and replaced the policy of cross-strait exchanges carried under the administration of Ma Ying-jeou with the policy of "Anti-China and Pro-America".Since Donald Trump took his office,the Taiwan question has become one of America's tools to contain China.Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study the Trump administration's policy toward Taiwan.This paper first introduces the new trend of the Trump administration's policy toward Taiwan.The United States has strengthened military exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan by increasing the scale and level of the US-Taiwan military,intensifying military exercises and frequently sending warships across the Taiwan strait.From 2016 to 2020,the United States has passed four National Defense Authorization Act to provide institutional guarantee for military relations with Taiwan.Egged on by Anti-China campaigners in Congress,the US has passed "Taiwan Travel Act" and "2019 TAIPEI Act" to boost official ties with Taiwan at the legal level.Second it explores the reasons behind Trump's policy changes on Taiwan.Over40 years of reform and opening up,China's rapid growth in economic and military strength has concerned the United States.The US has intensified its strategic competition with China.Besides,a series of "Pro-Taiwan" bills have been launched,mainly propelled by the Pro-Taiwan forces.In addition,the impacts of President Donald Trump's traits to the policy change cannot be ignored.Then it analyzes the impacts of the Taiwan policy change from the Trump Administration.First of all,Trump's policy on Taiwan has exerted huge negative impacts on China-US diplomatic relations,increasing the trust cost of China-US cooperation and seriously weakening the foundation of China-US amicable relations.Second,it encourages the arrogance of the "Taiwan Independence" forces and greatly increases the cost of putting pressure on the "Taiwan Independence" forces by the mainland.Thirdly,the arms sale to Taiwan hampers China's security and defense forces in the coastal areas,and creates a security dilemma between the mainland and Taiwan to a certain extent and finally weakens the mainland's military advantage over Taiwan.In the end,the east Asia will become more unstable.In addition,this paper will put forward solutions to the above problems.Given that the strategic competition between China and the United States is inevitable,China must face the challenges and defuse the difficult situation in which the United States is using the Taiwan question to pressure China.We can start from four aspects:strengthening our comprehensive national strength,winning over the hearts and minds of Taiwan people,improving China-US relations,and gaining international public support to lay a solid foundation for taking the lead on the Taiwan question and realizing the reunification of the motherland.
