A Lesson Study Of Improving Pre-service Teachers' Instructional Summary Skills In Math Classroom

Pre-service teachers,who are the main reserve force for future teachers,should master the instructional skills and apply reasonably it to the future classrooms.As one of the instructional skills that pre-service teachers must command in math classroom,instructional summary skills show an advantage in refining teaching content and strengthening teaching quality.However,pre-service teachers know little about it.Lesson study,which is regarded as an effective way in improving teachers' professional quality,exerts an important role in optimizing teaching method,improving professional level et al.Using lesson study,the present study mainly investigated the four specific questions mentioned below:What is the fundamental status quo of instructional summary skills among pre-service teachers in math classroom?Whether lesson study could significantly help those pre-service teachers to understand the instructional summary skills?How lesson study influence the instructional summary skills among pre-service teachers?Whether lesson study could contribute pre-service teachers to integrate the theoretical knowledge into teaching practice?Using literature research and action research method,quantitative research and qualitative research method,the present study recruited pre-service math teachers who participated in the educational probation activity organized by a provincial comprehensive university in 2019,102 pre-service teachers from three classes were taken as the questionnaire research objects and additional 14 pre-service teachers from three randomly selected educational probation subgroups who were further treated as the main research participants for tracking.We carried out action research with lesson examples and videos,and data collection were finished in two rounds of lesson studies.We obtained four conclusions based on the following analysis:(1)quantifying the questionnaire data from the pre-test and post-test;(2)quantifying the data from teaching evaluation form from the two rounds of lesson studies;(3)qualitative data analysis from the teaching design,transferring teaching videos into text and the interviews with two students in the groups and two other normal university students respectively.First,the results from pre-test data showed that pre-service teachers' pay little attention on the understanding and application of the concepts,operational requirements,and precautions to the instructional summary skills,though they emphasize the role of instructional summary skills in math classroom.From the results of the specific teaching design analysis,we concluded that before using the lesson study,the pre-service teachers are lack of the theoretical knowledge of instructional summary skills in math classroom,and they are not good at practical applicationSecond,according to the teaching content of "the properties of parallelograms" with lesson study,we found that there were some robust improvements for pre-service teachers in using theoretical understanding and practical application of instructional summary skills in math classroom,including accuracy,clarity,cognitive theory guidance,enlightenment,flexibility et al.Third,comparing the result of pre-test and post-test,we found that lesson study showed a positive role in promoting pre-service teachers' concept,operational requirements,precautions and other matters about the instructional summary skillsFourth,after the two rounds of lesson studies,there were some improvements for those pre-service teachers in mastering theoretical knowledge and practical application.From the simulated lecture videos and teaching evaluation form,we could draw a conclusion that pre-service teachers can apply the theoretical knowledge to teaching practice more appropriately and reasonably.Therefore,lesson study can effectively help pre-service teachers to apply the theoretical knowledge to teaching practiceFinally,through the lesson study,pre-service teachers can stress the interaction between teachers and classes,refine mathematical thinking methods and "four bases" teaching in classroom teaching,which fully reflected the characteristics of math educationBased on those conclusions,this study have some pedagogical implications:first,the pre-service teachers should not only strengthen theoretical learning of instructional summary skills,but also emphasize the practical training with specific teaching content;second,lesson study plays a significantly role in improving pre-employment teachers'instructional summary skills,suggesting in the process of practical training,they should focus on reflection and reconstruction,and should improve their instructional summary skills in various reflective practices on certain lesson;third,the pre-service teachers should strengthen cooperation and discussion among peers,and should discover problems,diagnose problems and find improvement strategies through mutual observation and comments;fourth,there are different forms of instructional summary skills in math classroom,each form are required to be combine with specific teaching content and teaching methods,and pre-service teachers need to improve the ability of textbook research;finally,applying the instructional summary skills require both careful advanced design and educational wit,pre-service teachers should do some adjustment flexibly based on the specific conditions of the math classroom.
