Compared with elementary school,the number of math symbols in junior high school textbooks has increased sharply.Therefore,students report that they do not understand or apply mathematical symbols,and think that mathematics is becoming more difficult to learn.Based on this,the study is mainly carried out from the following aspects.First,the study researches the level of mathematics symbol consciousness of junior high school students in towns,and explores the correlation between mathematics symbol consciousness and mathematics achievement;secondly,it analyzes the difference between mathematical symbol consciousness and grade or gender;finally,it analyzes the factors that affect the consciousness of mathematical symbols.It is expected to provide useful suggestions for the teaching of mathematics symbols in our country and to improve the awareness of mathematics symbols of junior high school students in towns.To solve the first four problems,this study divides mathematical symbol consciousness into three dimensions:mathematical understanding,mathematical expression,and mathematical operation,which is based on the research on mathematical symbol consciousness at home and abroad.Besides,2 or 3 sub-dimensions are set up for each dimension,and each sub-dimension is given an observation point.According to the theoretical framework,a suitable mathematics sign consciousness test paper for junior high school students in towns is compiled.Finally,according to the SOLO classification theory,each sub-dimension is divided into 5 levels,and points are assigned accordingly.To solve the fifth problem,focusing on the three dimensions of students' emotional attitudes in mathematics learning,students' cognition and understanding of mathematics symbols,and teachers' teaching situation of mathematics symbols,the study compiles a questionnaire to investigate the factors affecting students' learning of mathematical symbols.At the same time,the study learns more about the reasons for students' difficulties.To investigate and analyze the mathematics symbol consciousness of junior high school students in towns,the study selectes 145 seventh grade students,149 eighth grade students and145 ninth grade students in two junior high schools in Lingyuan City at the same level of development.The results show:Mathematics symbol consciousness of junior high school students in towns is at a relatively low level of development.There are differences in student symbol awareness between different grades,but there is no gender difference.There is a significant positive correlation between mathematics symbol awareness and mathematics performance.According to the results,the study summarizes the problems in the mathematics symbol consciousness of junior high school students in towns,such as(1)students and teachers do not fully understand mathematical symbols;(2)students have not enough training on mathematical symbols.At the end,the study gives corresponding teaching suggestions.That is,teachers should improve their own understanding of mathematical symbols,use mathematical symbols in a standard way in teaching,attach importance to the training of mathematical symbol expression and operation for students,and explore a variety of teaching methods of mathematical symbols.Besides,students have to correctly understand the meaning and application conditions of mathematical symbols,do more training of mathematical symbol expression and operation,and use spare time to enrich the knowledge of mathematical symbols.Final,social education and family education should also be coordinated and echoed with classroom education.
