Chinese characters are the oldest ideographs in the world,and have been handed down for thousands of years from the oracle bone script to the present.Chinese characters are not only symbols for recording culture,but also the wisdom of ancient ancestors and the bright history of Chinese civilization in every stroke.Since ancient times,the "etymology of characters" has been an important tool for learning Chinese characters,and it has taken on a new luster in today's elementary school and foreign language teaching,but is rarely found in the teaching of literary languages in high schools.The current research findings focus more on the role of "etymology and character theory" knowledge in the teaching of characters,and the research findings are mostly presented as a list of applicable "etymology and character theory" knowledge,but how to turn such subject knowledge into acceptable teaching knowledge for students is the only way for front-line teachers to apply it in practice.However,the most realistic problem facing front-line teachers is how to transform such subject knowledge into acceptable teaching knowledge for students.This study attempts to explore the necessity and current situation of the application of "etymological and phonological" knowledge and the possible effective implementation paths based on Schulman's theory of subject knowledge and the concept of core literacy with the help of research results in the fields of phonetics,exegesis,and phonology.In the first part,the value and significance of "etymological knowledge" are discussed from three levels;in the second part,a questionnaire survey is used to understand the current situation of "etymological knowledge" application;in the third part,based on the analysis of the current situation,a proposal is made from the perspective of teachers' professional development.In the third part,based on the analysis of the current situation,we propose strategies for applying the knowledge of "etymology and word theory" from the perspective of teachers' professional development.In the third part,we propose strategies for applying the knowledge of "etymology" from the perspective of teachers' professional development.It is an important tool for language teaching and learning,and is the inevitable result of the nationalization of language education.Its value has been generally recognized.However,the survey shows that most teachers feel overwhelmed and have little success in its daily application.This requires teachers to develop a sense of pedagogically oriented learning,to build a scientific knowledge system,and to be able to select appropriate content that can serve the teaching of the language according to the curriculum requirements and the actual needs of teaching,and eventually transform it through reasonable representations as well as teaching strategies that can be used for students' learning.
