Investigation On The Influence Of Cohabitation And Individual Characteristics On Marriage Quality

In modern society,the traditional concept of marriage is under attack,the marriage rate is declining,the divorce rate is rising,and the phenomenon of cohabitation before marriage is appearing more and more.There are roughly four explanations for the relationship between pre-marital cohabitation and marriage quality in academic circles: "trial marriage theory,choice theory,experience theory and popularization theory","trial marriage theory" believes that cohabitation before marriage has a positive effect on life after marriage and can improve life.Satisfaction and reduce the risk of divorce;"selection theory" believes that cohabitants themselves have certain characteristics,which will lead them to choose to live together before marriage,and will also lead to a subsequent low-quality marriage life;"experience theory" believes that the experience of cohabiting before marriage It itself will have a negative impact on the quality of the subsequent marriage,rather than the personal characteristics of both spouses;the "popularity theory" believes that cohabitation before marriage has no impact on the quality of the marriage after marriage,or has a small impact.So is there a relationship between cohabitation before first marriage and the quality of marriage? What is the relationship?On the basis of theoretical analysis,this article is based on the China Family Tracking Survey(CFPS)data.First,through descriptive statistical analysis and contingency table analysis,it explores the status quo of the cohabitation and marriage quality of Chinese residents before marriage;secondly,it uses binary logit regression analysis.,Explored the influencing factors of the cohabitation of Chinese residents before the first marriage;finally adopted the Heckman two-stage model to correct the bias caused by the self-selection of the cohabitation before the first marriage,and investigated the factors affecting the quality of marriage.The findings are as follows: 1.At present,society's tolerance and acceptance of pre-marital cohabitation is constantly improving,and the phenomenon of pre-marital cohabitation has become more and more common.2.The regression results show that education level,urban life experience,party membership,ethnicity,family income level,satisfaction with one's own life,and psychological state are all important variables that affect individuals living together before marriage.3.After controlling the sample self-selection of cohabitation before marriage,cohabitation before marriage and individual characteristics together have an impact on the quality of individual marriage.4.Cohabitation before marriage has a negative impact on marriage quality,and there are gender differences,that is,cohabitation before marriage has a greater negative impact on women's marriage quality than men.5.For residents born in different ages,cohabitation before the first marriage has different effects on the quality of marriage,and with the generalization of cohabitation,the negative relationship between cohabitation before marriage and marriage quality weakens.
