Physics is an important fundamental subject.Middle school students not only learn basic concepts and laws from physics,but also acquire scientific thinking methods through physics learning.Consequently,they obtain solid foundation needed for their further study in professional field.Physics is particularly important to the professional education of science and engineering.However it is well-known that physics learning is difficult.Therefore,it should be an important topic to be explored how to effectively improve the teaching and learning result of physics.Physics learning is also a cognitive process,so the research results of cognitive psychology about improving cognitive efficiency should be consulted to promote physics education.Previous studies have shown that human brain information processing is an important stage during the establishing of certain cognition,while various forms of cognitive representation are the main methods of information processing.Therefore,strengthening students' multiple representation ability in process of physics teaching can benefit their physics learning.Several topics relevant with above are investigated and discussed in this work.To apply multiple representations into physics teaching,the connotation of various representations and their combination with relative physics content should be first clarified.The content of textbook of high school physics is analyzed in this work.The details of various representations with physical background are introduced accompanied by analysis of certain content of textbook.The possible ideas to strengthen the representation ability of students are also proposed.For better result of application of multiple representations in physics teaching,the situation of students' representation ability should be clarified.The answer sheets of test for selected senior high school students were analyzed,and it is found that some students have poor performance in several aspects of representation.On the whole,physics learning effect of students is positively related to their representation ability.In order to improve teaching effect,the teaching strategy based on multiple representations is recommended in this work.The case of teaching of Newton's second law is introduced.Combined with the application of multiple representations,the specific instructional design scheme is proposed,which is expected to help students understand the Newton's second law and apply it solving problems,and provide reference for other educators who interested in improving teaching effect of physics from the perspective of cognition.
