As one of the main contents of number and algebra, alphabetic representation is the key to the transition from arithmetic to algebra in junior high school. Therefore, the level of students' understanding of alphabetic numbers determines the speed of transition from arithmetic to algebra. At the same time,it also provides some preparation for the learning of equations, inequalities, functions, etc. In the internship,it was found that students in the second half of the 7th grade still have difficulties in understanding alphabetic numbers after studying the chapter on alphabetic numbers in the first half of the 7th grade. In this paper, the following aspects of work were carried out:First, the literature was reviewed through literature analysis, and the questionnaire was developed based on the views of Liu Xiaoyi from Northeast Normal University;Second, the questionnaire was revised through classroom observation and post-class interviews;Third, the data were collected, and then SPSS22.0 was used to analyze the survey data, and the internal consistency coefficient of the questionnaire was found to be The internal consistency coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.800,and the KMO test value was 0.812,indicating that the questionnaire has good reliability and validity;Fourth, the questionnaire was used to compare the differences of students' understanding of alphabetic numbers by gender, class and grade. The questionnaire was administered to 178 students in the seventh grade at my internship school,Through analysis and research, the following conclusions are drawn:(1)The overall level of students' understanding of numbers represented by letters is low, with the best performance in the dimension of operations of numbers represented by letters and the worst performance in the dimension of applications of numbers represented by letters.(2)In terms of gender, there is no significant difference between male and female students in the three dimensions of operations, relationships and applications of numbers represented by letters, while male students are slightly better than female students in the dimension of operations, and there is a significant difference between male and female students in the dimension of the meaning of numbers represented by letters, which is mainly reflected in the fact that female students are better than male students in the dimension of the meaning of numbers represented by letters. In terms of different classes, there is a significant difference between class 7(4)and class 7(8),class 7(8)and class 7(11)in the dimension of operations, and between class 7(4)and class 7(8),class 7(4)and class 7(10),class 7(4)and class 7(11)in the dimension of application. However, the students in the lower group did not necessarily have a lower level of understanding than the students in the higher group.Based on the findings of the study and the problems of students, the following suggestions are given:(1)strengthen the connection between middle school and elementary school in specific situations;(2)emphasize the teaching of concepts and guide students to understand the essence;(3)form new ideas based on the original knowledge;(4)be good at thinking and summarizing.
