To tighten the learning process of college students and enhance the level of academic challenge of college students is one of the key concerns of the undergraduate teaching reform.For a course,it is also a good vision to give college students a good learning experience and gain from it.The flipped class model,which previews the teaching of basic concepts,allows teachers and students have more time to answer questions and internalize knowledge in class.Maybe it is a way to the improvement of academic challenges.This study focuses on whether the flipped class can improve the academic challenge of college students.Taking the 2019 students majoring in educational technology in a university in Nanjing as the research object,this study collects and analyze relevant data through questionnaire survey,self-report,and other methods,in order to find out whether the flipped class can improve the academic challenge of college students,then analyze the internal reasons.The results show that the level of academic challenge of college students are improved using the flipped class model.There was no significant difference between boys and girls in the level of academic challenge,but boys had higher sense of achievement and satisfaction.There is an inverted "U" shaped phenomenon in the level of academic challenge perceived by students with different learning levels,that is,students with intermediate grades experience the highest degree of academic challenge.The improvement of academic challenge is embodied in five aspects: curriculum pressure,learning burden,cognitive goals,learning engagement,and harvest and satisfaction.In flipped class,there are much more tasks and high difficulty,which brings about the improvement of the pressure of the course;students need to spend more time in the course,which improve the learning burden;The emphasis on problem solving in the curriculum and the feedback students receive when they complete the teacher's tasks produce higher cognitive goals.Increased interaction between teachers and students,as well as students learning more and learning more efficiently,leads to increased investment in learning;The gain and sense of achievement in the learning process lead to the improvement of the sense of gain and satisfaction.Under the flipped class model,the learning status of college students have been effectively changed,which comes from the higher course objectives of flipped classroom teaching,the instructional design of independent learning before class as well as inquiry in class,and the students' responsibilities brought by process evaluation.Based on this research,the following teaching reform suggestions are put forward to improve the level of academic challenge,including:(1)Promote and apply flipped classroom teaching method;(2)Further optimize the classroom teaching method:Learning activities before class and in class should both be considered.Teachers should help students timely check and fill leakage through interspersed procedural evaluation,and strengthen the necessary feedback mechanism.Besides,teachers should take advantage of the characteristics of flipped classroom to pay attention to students' mastery and provide timely help to reduce students' sense of resistance to learning;(3)Design higher-order thinking objectives,attach importance to the deconstruction and reconstruction of teaching structure,and consolidate the evaluation process.
