With the industrialization and urbanization, the urban-rural relationship of China is undergoing continuous development.Jiangsu Province,As an economically developed area, its urban-rural development, especially rural transformation,is at the forefront of China. In nearly ten years, some important village construction works have been successively carried out.The rural areas have undergone profound changes in population mobility, industrial structure, and social forms. There have been widespread diversification of industries and employment, continuous influx of population and capital, and increasingly close urban-rural connections, etc. The traditional homogeneous rural community is evolving into a diverse and heterogeneous urban-rural mixed community. The value and attractiveness of the village are prominent, and the rural development bursts with new vitality. On the basis of existing research, this article proposes the definition of rural mixed-settling: when industrialization and urbanization have reached a certain stage, rural population and residential forms appear to be diversified and mixed under the combined effect of external forces and independent pursuit of rural development. Thus rural areas transform from a homogeneous community to a heterogeneous mixed-settling community.Furthermore, this article takes She Village as an example, and comprehensively uses qualitative analysis, system analysis, and spatial expression to carry out detailed case studies, with a view to revealing the characteristics and mechanism of rural mixed-settling in developed areas in China. The main research results are as follows:First,it discusses and summarizes the characteristics and manifestations of rural mixed-settling.It is believed that the diversification of rural population and the complication of its residential forms are the two basic characteristics. With the continuous adjustment of rural industry structure, the employment and income structures of the indigenous villagers have changed accordingly, leading to the differentiation of the internal demographic structure of the village.Migrants such as demolished households, migrant workers, tourism practitioners and urban residents have enhanced the heterogeneity of rural polulation. The evolution of the rural industry and population structure has led to corresponding changes in rural residential forms. The originally closed,one-family-housed rural dwellings carry different forms of rental rooms.Various business types have created multifunctional space that integrates the functions of residence and management.Second,it analyzes the spatial evolution process of rural mixed-settling.It is believed that the transformation of the village from a homogeneous community to a mixed-settling community has strongly promoted the evolution of rural space, created some new characteristics in rural industrial structure, land use form, village environment, daily life and social relationship.Agricultural land has been squeezed by non-agricultural industries, and the function of agricultural space is constantly changing and reorganizing. The production, living and communication activities of heterogeneous subjects have promoted the alienation of the village space. The ecological space is significant to the promotion of rural value,so it has continued to expand and its functions have been strengthened.Third,it reveals the mechanism of rural mixed-settling.It is believed that the rural mixed settlement is formed under the combined effect of the macroeconomic and social changes, the evolution of urban-rural relations, and the micro-personal behavioral decision-making.Driven by the radiation of industrialization and urbanization,as well as the guidance of the government, rural planners, and social forces, the village actively integrates internal and external resources and achives new endogenous development. The exchange of urban and rural factors is increasing. These above are macro driving forces.Individuals and families make employing and housing decisions under the promotion of interest maximizing, ideals of pastoral life, and social networks, which directly leads to rural mixed settlement at the micro level.Fourth, based on the existing research results, the specificity and generality of the case village, the attractiveness and vitality of the village, the challenges and difficulties faced by the mixed-settling villages, and the suggestions for their development have been discussed to trigger more related research, and to further enrich this field.
