With the friendly ties between China and the UK and China’s own growing international influence, more and more British secondary school students are choosing Chinese as their GCSE foreign language subject. In 2017,the two main UK exam boards,AQA and Edexcel, both issued new GCSE Chinese syllabuses, reforming the GCSE Chinese exams. The reformed GCSE Chinese examinations have become more difficult and the questions are more flexible and practical.Among the four major sections of GCSE Chinese exams, listening, speaking, reading and writing, the writing exam is considered to be the most difficult one.As we all know, the writing test not only requires students to write correct Chinese characters, but also to write essays that are clearly organized, have a clear point of view, and conform to Chinese expression habits, which undoubtedly adds a great deal of difficulty to British secondary school students who are native English speakers, and also greatly affects students’ GCSE Chinese writing test. Therefore, this paper starts from the analysis of the GCSE Chinese Writing Test in British secondary schools, and introduces the marking criteria and competency requirements of the GCSE Writing Test in detail;collects samples of British secondary school students taking the GCSE Writing Test as the analytic corpus, and categorizes them statistically and classifies them. The questionnaire on the current teaching situation was distributed to colleagues and seniors who have been or are still working as Chinese language teachers in British secondary schools in the three years from 2017 to 2020,and the questionnaires were collected and analyzed by SPSS data analysis software in order to have a relatively comprehensive understanding of the current teaching situation of Chinese writing in British secondary schools; Finally, combining the analysis of the questionnaire survey results, the analysis of students’ biases in writing and the GCSE Chinese writing test marking criteria and proficiency requirements,we provide corresponding suggestions and references for teaching Chinese writing in British secondary schools to help students overcome their fear of learning Chinese writing, improve their Chinese writing level and enhance their ability to cope with the GCSE Chinese writing test.
