Reading is an important way to understand the world and develop thinking by using language and characters.It is of great practical significance to discuss how to design Chinese textbooks scientifically and rationally to promote students' independent reading and improve their reading literacy.The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of illustrations,illustrations' type and location on reading comprehension(including recall and deductive comprehension),learning motivation and cognitive load of students in narrative articles of primary school Chinese textbooks by quasi-experimental method,based on the theories of narrative comprehension and multimedia learning.The experiments were 2(illustrations' type: narrative vs.representational)×3(illustrations' position: before the full text vs.after the full text vs.contiguous to the corresponding text)interaction design.In addition,experiment 1 consisted of a control group in which students were reading with text only to explore the effect of using illustrations on reading.All the participants were third graders from a primary school in Hangzhou.Experiment 1 contained 170 valid sample data,and Experiment 2 contained 139 valid sample data.The experimental results confirm the beneficial effect of illustration on narrative reading,and draw the following conclusions about the effect of illustration type and illustration position:1.The effect of illustration type is significant.Using narrative illustration can promote students' learning motivation and reduce external cognitive load.2.The effect of illustration position is significant.The corresponding presentation of images and texts can effectively promote students' reading comprehension and reduce their external cognitive load,but the effect of illustration position on students' recall is only reflected in delayed recall,not immediate recall.3.The effect of illustration type and illustration position is basically the same for different types of narrative articles,and there are some differences in the performance of external cognitive load.Based on the research conclusions,some suggestions are put forward for the graphic design of narrative articles in primary school Chinese textbooks: 1.Appropriately add narrative illustrations to maintain learning motivation.2.Considering the two effects comprehensively to reduce external cognitive load.3.Present illustrations and the corresponding text spatially adjacent to promote comprehension and memory.4.Pay attention to the way of narration and choose illustrations flexibly.In addition,it provides enlightenment for the use of teaching pictures of narrative articles in primary school Chinese: 1.Respect students' reading level and use pictures to enhance their reading interest.2.Use illustrations to promote comprehension and thus strengthen long-term memory.
