Teachers' subject matter knowledge(SMK)is a necessary basis for teachers to carry out effective teaching, and also an important factor affecting students' knowledge structure.According to constructivism theory, teachers will show different SMK levels due to their different environments. In this study,50 pre-service teachers and 80 in-service teachers were tested by Brief Electricity and Magnetism Assessment(BEMA)to compare the characteristics and differences of their SMK levels. At the same time, with the help of textbook analysis and qualitative interviews, the causes and pathways of SMK level change were further explored. In terms of the characteristics and differences of SMK level,we take score statistics, difference and accuracy as the entry point.Through the analysis,it is found that the pre-service teachers show stronger SMK level of electromagnetism, and there is no significant difference between the in-service teachers and the pre-service teachers who have never taken college electromagnetism.Although most of the questions in BEMA were related to high school,in-service teachers showed the lowest correct rate of58.62%.In terms of the causes and pathways of changes in SMK levels,we categorize the questions and focus on four of them.It is found that according to the different types of topics, the change of SMK level may be related to the characteristics of concept itself, the order of textbook arrangement, teachers' thinking pattern and teachers' subject ability. Finally,on the basis of quantitative and qualitative results,we provide references and suggestions for teacher education development from the perspectives of internal discipline concept system, interdisciplinary concept system and informal learning.
