Silicon nitride ceramic materials have many characteristics such as low density, high hardness, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and self-lubricating properties, and are often used as rolling body materials for ceramic ball bearings, which can work in high temperature, high strength, high corrosion and other harsh environments. With the increase in demand for silicon nitride ceramic balls, the processing effect of silicon nitride ceramic has put forward higher requirements, its as hard and brittle materials, low surface energy, processing costs and processing difficulties. The grinding process of silicon nitride ceramic ball grinding fluid is one of the key factors to obtain high quality processing results,is also the main consumables in the grinding process, currently known silicon nitride ceramic ball grinding fluid, its formula has a certain degree of confidentiality, the composition is more complex and contains strong acids and alkalis and other corrosive reagents, the operator, instruments and equipment and the natural environment are potentially harmful, and modern manufacturing and green development is not consistent. In addition, the market share of domestic silicon nitride ceramic ball environmentally friendly grinding fluid is still relatively low, mainly dependent on imports, resulting in the high price of grinding fluid. Therefore,it is still of great relevance to study water-based grinding fluids for the finishing stage of silicon nitride ceramic balls. This paper starts from the direction of the grinding fluid, for silicon nitride ceramic balls for the finishing stage of grinding processing, the study of the law of influence of the components in the grinding fluid on the grinding processing effect, through the single-factor test method and orthogonal test method to optimize the composition of the grinding fluid, mainly including the type of abrasive in the grinding fluid, the concentration, the p H value of the grinding fluid, according to the optimized parameters, the selection and optimization of the content of other additives in the grinding fluid The final composition of the water-based grinding solution for the silicon nitride ceramic balls was determined as follows: the abrasive was a mixture of silicon carbide and iron oxide(8:2),the p H adjuster was oxalic acid and triethanolamine, the rust inhibitor was sodium molybdate and triethanolamine, the suspending agent was montmorillonite, the lubricant was polyethylene glycol 600,the dispersant was medilan and the remaining components were deionised water. The surface roughness of the silicon nitride ceramic balls was 13.9 nm,with no scratches or pits on the surface, and the material removal rate reached 193 μg/h.In comparison with the processing effect of the commercially available water-based silicon carbide lapping solution, the home-made lapping solution had a higher material removal rate and better surface roughness. In addition, the additives used in the grinding fluid are inexpensive and environmentally friendly, and have a certain anti-corrosive effect on metals, which helps to protect the grinding equipment. In summary, the aqueous abrasive solution has excellent grinding results and is simple in composition, inexpensive and non-hazardous to the operator and the environment.
