A domestic petrochemical company plans to build a set of 400,000 tons/year high-pressure hydrogenation unit of lubricating oil.The primary objective of this paper is to select a suitable catalyst for the new unit.Five kinds of paraffin-based crude oil distillates were used in the paper, and three kinds of hydrogenation catalysts were investigated through the "full hydrogen method" high-pressure hydrogenation process. The standard reference the "General Lubricant Base Oil Q/SY 44-2009" evaluates the hydrogenation performance of each catalyst, and provides basic data support for catalyst selection for the new units.Firstly, the hydrogenation effect of three catalysts was investigated with the third-line vacuum gas oil as the feed stock, and two catalysts were screened out according to the properties of the hydrotreated products and the properties of the isomerized dewaxing-supplementary refined products. Then, the hydrogenation effect of the two catalysts was investigated with the fourth-line vacuum gas oil as the feed stock, and one catalyst was determined by comparing the properties of the fractions which >470℃.The test results show the chosen one compared with the other two catalysts, the catalyst can increase the product’s viscosity index to 122,and reduce the pour point to-18℃.Secondly,the hydrogenation effect of the mixed feed stock was investigated for this catalyst. The test results showed that when the catalyst was treated with the mixed third-line vacuum gas oil,the viscosity index of the fraction which > 390 °C was 117,and the pour point was-21 °C.The catalyst was treated with the mixed fourth-line vacuum gas oil,the viscosity index of the fraction which >420°C was 117,and the pour point was-20°C.The catalyst was further determined to be suitable for use in the paraffinic crude oil distillates used herein. Finally, the hydrogenation process of this catalyst was optimized and the material balance was calculated. The test results showed that when the catalyst was used to hydrogenated the mixed third-line vacuum gas oil,its product which >390 ℃ fraction(yield 57.71wt%,viscosity index 120,pour point-19℃)met the VHVI-6 standard. And hydrogenated the mixed third-line vacuum gas oil,its product which >420℃ fraction(yield 55.11wt%,viscosity index 120,pour point-18℃)met the VHVI-8 standard. And hydrogenated the deasphalting oil,its product which >520℃ fraction(yield 33.10wt%,viscosity index 96,pour point-7℃)met the HVI 90 BS standard.
