After the Housing Reform in China, housing has changed from welfare to market-oriented commodity. As a typical product of the planned economy and an important component of urban space,Danwei Community has experienced the evolution from homogenous space in the planned economy to heterogeneous collage in the market economy, mirroring the transitional process of urban spatial structure in China.Although this issue has long been discussed in academia, there has been little research on the topic: the process of disintegration and differentiation of Danwei space from the perspective of social space.Based on qualitative research methods including participatory observation, text analysis and in-depth interviews, this research takes Nanjing Yangtze Danwei Community as the study case,to retrospect the evolutionary process of social space in the community since its construction,to describe and analyze the characteristics of social space, and to explore the driving forces that promote the spatial evolution throughout the process.Through the empirical analysis, the study depicts the process that the spatial planning characteristics of Yangtze Danwei Community have gradually been replaced by market characteristics, and points out that with the adjustment of policy and the reform of regulation,Yangtze Danwei Community has been transformed from an all-round,fully-managed welfare courtyard to a large-scale residential community. However, the explicit or recessive inertial impact of Danwei(work units)has still been exerting on the evolutionary process of Danwei Community, either in the way of visible space or invisible culture, which needs to be carefully considered in its transition. The introduction part first introduces the research background, research significance, main research methods, research framework and content. The second chapter is the literature review of related research, mainly from two aspects: Danwei space research and social space research. The third chapter mainly explores the social and spatial evolution of Nanjing Yangtze Danwei Community, and combs the archives of Yangtze Petrochemical Company in the past 40 years through field investigation, text analysis,in-depth interview and other research methods. It is found that since the construction of Yangtze Danwei Community, its spatial evolution has experienced four stages:danweinization, disintegration of danweinization,de-danweinization,and post-danweinization that is,large-scale community, with conceptual explanation and characteristic analysis of each four periods.By focusing on the social space phenomenon formed in the evolution of Yangtze Danwei Community, the fourth chapter reveals the relatively static characteristics of social space reorganization, including dominant heterogeneity of residential space, recessive perceptual spatial differentiation and segregation. It also reveals its diachronic dynamic characteristics of social differentiation--the path of residential migration and social mobility, and expounds the formation process and reasons of these characteristics. The fifth chapter attempts to construct a comprehensive mechanism interpretation framework for the evolution of social space from the perspectives of policy system, economic system, urban space, social culture, and micro-individuals.The sixth chapter is the conclusion and prospect, which summarizes the main findings of the research, puts forward the innovation and shortcomings of the research, and looks forward to the future research direction. The whole thesis contains about 63 000 words,36 pictures and charts.
