"Knowledgeable And True"-A Research Of The Material Design In Bawa’s Architecture

Geoffrey Bawa is one of The most important architects in Asia,and his work often skillfully integrates multiple elements to create a rich and natural spatial experience.Despite the truth that Bawa himself had left little text description and analysis of his works.so far,there have been a lot of discussion on his design,most of which focused on his identity label of "regionalist architect" and the introduction and evaluation of his individual architectural schemes.Yet,the discussion about special analysis and summary of his building materials are rare.The materiality plays an important role in Bawa’s design.It not only determines people’s comprehensive perception,but also affects the overall expression of space as well as the choice of structure.This paper focus on bawa’s material design,and fills in the blank of bawa’s design thought and work research through data collection,sorting and analysis.Based on the interpretation of the relevant theory,this paper first through to the reports,the architectural design works,the choice of materials to conduct a comprehensive combing,induction and reasoning.And then elaborates the characteristics of materials-using in building career,on this basis,this paper summarizes the principle of Bawa’s material-using.At last,based on the clue of material-using principle for to the specific case of space performance,the paper analyses the material selection and construction methods.Then discuss the relationship between the Architect’s final design intent,to further explore the tile "rich","green","natural" or "complex" of how space is realized through the design of materials.Concluding that the material using in Bawa’s projects are "Knowlegeable and Authentic".Through the massive case study of Bawa on the aspect of material using characteristics summarized,this paper summarizes the texture,color and tactile impression of the materials Bawa used and analysis how they influence the function of space and how they impact on the human sensory experience.Thereover provide help for the contemporary architectural design.
