The Research On Architectural Creative Thoughts And Works Of Geoffrey Bawa

Architects in Developing country, especially in Southeast and South Asia, who have gained international recognition on regional architecture design, have formed their own unique styles. In developing countries' special background, the combination of their education from the west and vernacular culture is a phenomenon in regionalism develops. Their successes have pointed out the direction of the regional architecture design in developing countries.The Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa got an international reputation, however, he was unfamiliar to the domestic architects. It is his contribution that lies in combining the vernacular traditional culture with modernism furthest to create modernistic architecture with extremely rich local characteristics, depending on the identity of different region. Geoffrey Bawa hasn't label himself with"Regionalism", though his thoughts belongs to the category of the regional architecture theory. This paper tries to analyze the works of Geoffrey Bawa from the perspective of regional architectural theory, for the sake of more accurate and profound understanding of the thoughts of Bawa, while by introducing and analyzing the works of this master of regional modernism, Complement the domestic regional architectural theory analysis and practice of creation.First and foremost, this paper takes a brief analysis and summary of regional architectural theory at home and abroad; then on the background of domestic architects, takes a comprehensive discussion of the foreign critical regionalism with domestic regional architectural theory, which get a"integrated regional architecture"as the theory base of analysis on Geoffrey Bawa's thoughts. The analysis and interpretation based on the works of Geoffrey Bawa, not just relying on the theoretical study, reach the conclusion. Thirdly, taking a large number of Geoffrey Bawa's work and the three research methods of integrated regional architecture as classification, this paper analyses the design thoughts of Geoffrey Bawa, which obtain a result of"regional modernism"as Geoffrey Bawa's design thoughts. Finally, the paper take a continue explanation on two of the famous architecture of Geoffrey Bawa, and summarize limitations and significance of research on Geoffrey Bawa.
