Study On The Spacial Complexity Of Geoffrey Bawa's Design Works

Geoffrey Bawa's design works are diverse in materials,rich in furnishings,flexible in space and rich in experiences.The root of this is that Bawa creates a spacial complexity through the specific rules he established.This paper analyzes its design works from three aspects: general layout,plan space organization and section space organization,and explores the source of its spacial complexity from the perspective of architectural design.In terms of general layout,Bawa creates rich interior spacial levels by placing courtyards in the building,dispersing the volume and making connections by the corridor.The interior and exterior nested and alternately appearing.meanwhile,Bawa preserves the natural information of the terrain and make use of it by bring it into the buildings.His multi-level and differential treatment of landscape makes it "infiltrate layer by layer" into the interior.In terms of plan space organization,Bawa divided the space in a flexible but rigorous order according to the actual functions and the specific characteristics of users,and then arranged it reasonably according to this order,so that the main functional rooms have an independent internal and external environment.Therefore,no matter the room,transportation,transition space or courtyard,they are all multi-level,with clear direction,with special ownership and identity.Everything in the plan is unified in a strict differential order pattern,but on the surface they are homogeneous and harmonious.In the section space organization,Bawa makes the building conform to the terrain to create a variety of space forms,and organizes them through the space sequence.In different floors,through the change of space scale,direction and landscape,it brings rich sight relationship and body feeling.The space is full of connections,resulting in space complexity.By using the methods of literature analysis,field research,case study and summary,this paper hopes to have a deeper understanding of Bawa's design methods,design language and rich connotation of his architectural works,and to provide ideas and methods for theoretical research and practice.
