As an expanding group of thr elderly, their demands for urban public spaces such as green space are getting higher and higher, while the construction of a livable environment for elderly adults in my country is seriously lagging behind. With the increase of age,the mental health and various physical functions of old people gradually decline, such as the decrease in the ability to take care of themselves in daily life, the increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases, and the prominent psychological problems. The health problem needs to be solved urgently.Green space environment with high-quality can promote healthy behaviors such as physical activities and social interaction activities, and it can also positively affect their mental health. At present,Chinese scholars pay little attention to the research and practice of residential green space planning under specific climatic conditions, especially the background of cold winter climate.Cold weather has a strong inhibitory effect on the outdoor activities of elderly residents, and reasonable planning and layout of residential green space can weaken the negative impact of the winter climate to a certain extent. In this paper, the investigation and model analysis of the relationship between the mental health of the elderly and their activity behaviors and the characteristics of residential green space have certain regional characteristics and strong climate representativeness of severe cold regions, which is important for healthy human settlements and city research. At first, this study sorted out the factors that affect the activities of the elderly in the green space of the residential area as well as their mental health. Then it clarified the role of green area activity behaviors on the mental health of elderly people based on analyzing the influence of winter climate on residential green area activities and the mental health of elderly people in cold cities,so as to provide theoretical support for the subsequent construction of the elderly mental health model and the design of questionnaires. This study uses a combination of field researches and questionnaires to survey 226 elderly residents in 6 sample communities in Harbin, and quantitatively analyzes the individual attributes, green space environmental characteristics, environmental cognition, activity behavior, and mental health of the elderly.Use multiple linear regression analysis to explore the relationship between activity behavior and mental health, and further explore the influencing factors of activity behavior. The results show that under the severe cold climate:(1)Residential green space activity behavior still has a positive effect on the mental health of the elderly;(2)Residential green space activity behavior is driven by multiple factors,of which the green space environmental characteristics are the most important and have a positive effect on activity frequency, duration and type. Finally, based on the above conclusions, suggestions for the planning and design of green space that are oriented to promote the mental health of the elderly is proposed.
