Based on the current situation of increasing carbon emissions from urban transportation, urban commuting as one of the important sources of urban transportation carbon emissions,it is necessary to study the characteristics and formation mechanism of residents’ commuting and its carbon emissions from the perspective of residents’ commuting behavior in this paper. The purpose of this study is to analyze the specific characteristics of residents’ commuting carbon emissions and its formation mechanism based on multi-source heterogeneous data processing analysis, and to propose corresponding low-carbon spatial development strategies. In response to the existing technical problems, firstly, the multi-source data such as cell phone signaling, identification of bus route network, and establishment of planning time-slotted speed threshold interval are used to identify the commuting modes of the residents within the study area multiple times, and then the elements of the commuting characteristics of the residents of Xi’an are analyzed from different spatial levels.Secondly, carbon emission factors were established, carbon emissions generated by different residents using different means of transportation were calculated, and by introducing the Gini coefficient method and spatial autocorrelation theory, commuting carbon emission characteristic elements of residents in Xi’an city at different spatial levels were analyzed from the commuting attribute level and commuting space-time level, and the formation mechanism of commuting carbon emissions was analyzed by combining regression models, and a low carbonization strategy based on spatial development was proposed. The main findings of the study are The main findings of the study are.(1)In terms of commuting characteristics, the number of commuters involved in commuting decreases exponentially with the increase of age structure. The dense residential area and the dense employment area in Xi’an are more spatially matched, with the residential space being more dispersed and the employment space more aggregated in general. In terms of the choice of commuting tools, commuters are not yet able to meet the requirements of low-carbon transportation, and the commuting distance is mainly medium distance commuting, and the number of very close commuting is small.(2)In terms of commuting carbon emission characteristics, the total commuting carbon emission in Xi’an in May is about 15,459 tons, and the average commuting carbon emission of men in Xi’an is generally about 17% higher than that of women. With the gradual increase of age groups, commuting carbon emissions show an inverted "U" curve of rising and then falling. At the spatial level, carbon emissions in Xi’an are more in line with the 80/30 quantitative distribution. In terms of spatial location, carbon emissions are more unequal in the central area, and the farther the location is from the city center, the more equal the carbon emissions are.The per capita carbon emission situation in the east and north areas of Xi’an is significantly higher than that in the central area of the city, while the per capita carbon emission situation in the development zones such as High-tech Zone and Qujiang New Area, which are located in the south of the city,is less than that in the northeast area.(3)Regarding the formation mechanism of commuting carbon emissions,it is found that the appropriate increase in the ratio of employment to residence is conducive to reducing the commuting distance of commuters, the carbon emission of residents decreases with the increase of land use diversity and road network density, the increase of employment distance and commuting time will significantly promote commuters to adopt high carbon emission commuting mode, the more dense the bus stops and the more bus route networks, the higher the service level of public transportation.the higher the proportion of commuters traveling by public transportation.
