| Urban development and architectural progress are inseparable from the support of technology.The electrification process of Wuhan is basically synchronized with the integration of the three towns into Wuhan City,which is an important symbol of urban modernization.Based on the study of industrial and urban related historical materials after the opening of Hankou,this paper combs the development process of power industry in Wuhan,and discusses the relevant characteristics of modern Wuhan urban development and architectural changes under the background of electrification.During the "golden decade" of the Republic of China from the 1920 s to the 1930 s,the development process of Wuhan’s power system accelerated.The chronicle of Hukou Yichang military important places(Volume II),written in 1936,also recorded the electrification situation of Wuhan in this period based on the needs of military planning,which is an important source of information for this study.The research scope selected in this paper is from the opening of Hankou in 1861 to the end of the Republic of China in 1936,to explore the formation of Wuhan modern city and its early electrification process.This paper hopes to explore the relationship between power system and urban development by comparing the urban space construction,municipal construction and building construction in Wuhan before and after the popularization of power system in the order of historical process.Firstly,this paper studies and discusses how electrical knowledge and power technology are introduced into Wuhan and developed and applied,and finds its special development process.The three towns of Wuhan in the late Qing Dynasty were in the period of urban formation and were basically in the handicraft era of pre electrification.The urban development had not been affected too much by the power system.The analysis of city and architecture focuses on three aspects: type,structure and architectural style.With the acceleration of industrial and commercial development in Wuhan,electrification,as an important part of the modern industrial system in the 20 th century,has also been rapidly formed and expanded in Wuhan,an important industrial city in China.From 1906 to 1930,the development of power industry in Wuhan entered an early stage of rapid expansion.This stage of discussion is mainly through the sorting of historical materials to sort out the establishment of power system and municipal construction in various regions.Through the collation of documents and the on-the-spot investigation of existing industrial heritage cases,this paper obtains the achievements of the development of modern Wuhan electric power industry,analyzes the typical architectural cases from three aspects: type,architectural equipment,space construction and design,and discusses the important role of the electric power system in urban and architectural development,so as to provide sufficient arguments for the later comparative discussion.Finally,compare the changes of Wuhan Urban Construction in different stages from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China,and analyze the impact of power system on Wuhan urban development.This paper holds that the power industry and power system promoted the urban development of Wuhan in modern times.Electric power technology not only improves the living standards of urban people,makes the city appear a new scene,but also provides a strong driving force for the process of Wuhan’s urban modernization. |
