With the increasing maturity of China’s urbanization,the development of transportation in our country has entered a new stage.The Outline of the National Comprehensive Three-Dimensional Transportation Network Plan proposes the goal of promoting the construction of multi-level rail transportation networks in metropolitan areas,based on the many characteristics of urban agglomerations possessing high population density,wide radiation area and numerous economic exchanges.Suburban railways play an indispensable role in supporting high-quality transportation development in the region and safeguarding intercity transportation circles.China’s vast territory is faced with uneven economic development in different regions,which is also reflected in the different degrees of development of metropolitan areas in different regions,and the rapid development of metropolitan areas in different regions,the means to solve the intra-regional transportation,the shape of metropolitan areas and planning also vary.According to the Outline,suburban railways are gaining importance as an economical transportation mode that can promote the proper development of metropolitan areas.Some urban agglomerations in China have already established suburban railway networks.Therefore,it is appropriate to study the scale and layout of suburban railway networks for both economically developed urban agglomerations with existing partially constructed networks and those urban agglomerations that need development and have sufficient economic support for suburban railway construction.The article begins by introducing the definition of suburban railway and its development status at home and abroad,and analyzes the technical characteristics,functional positioning and factors influencing the scale of the suburban railway network.The characteristics of suburban railways and their railway passenger flow characteristics in the metropolitan area are analyzed,and the differences and connections with other rail transportation modes are elaborated,providing a theoretical basis for the subsequent research on the measurement and layout of the scale of suburban railway networks.Secondly,the existing methods for measuring the scale of the suburban railway network are explained,the rationality of the existing methods and the differences and shortcomings of their application in the study of the scale of the suburban railway network in the metropolitan area are analyzed,and the ideas and methods for measuring the scale and layout of the suburban railway network in the metropolitan area are proposed in this paper.In terms of the scale of the network,the scale of the metropolitan area railway network is estimated from the perspectives of economic scale and passenger demand,and the results of the network scale prediction are analyzed by using the analogy method.As for the layout of the network,the administrative division of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan metropolitan area is selected as the node,and the network planning problem is transformed into a graph theory-based objective planning problem for solution.Lastly,focusing on the suburban railway in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration,the article applies the proposed methodology and model to calculate the future scale of the suburban railway in this region.Based on the analysis and calculation results,the article attempts to propose reasonable network layout demonstrating that they accurately reflect the characteristics of the suburban railway network scale and layout in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan region,aligning with the railway development trends in the area.This study can provide certain guidance for the development of the suburban railway in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan region to a certain extent.schemes for the suburban railway in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration for the years 2027 and 2030.The final results are evaluated and analyzed.
