With unique advantages such as low threshold, low cost and high flexibility, street vending has developed into a global phenomenon, becoming a spatial carrier of city vitality and a flowing cultural symbol. However, street stalls have long been regarded as informal space opposed to formality and modernity,of which the bottom-up formation often conflicts with the top-down urban planning. In the post-epidemic era, under the background of the loosening of stall economy at the national policy level, the legal status and diverse values of street vending have become a social consensus.Ignoring the needs and natural advantages of street stalls is ineffective. It is urgently needed to re-examine its spontaneous spatiotemporal characteristics, demands and laws for the good governance of street vending. The thesis selects the street stalls in Nanjing Old City as the research object.By introducing the self-organization theory as the core research perspective,it verifies and summarizes the multi-scale self-organization characteristics of the street stalls in the old city, constructing a cognition-governance system of street vending with three dimensions of "macro-core-individual".The empirical research of the thesis is mainly divided into three parts. At the macro scale, through the combination of fieldwork and big data, quantitative and qualitative research methods,it summarizes the spatial distribution characteristics of street stalls in Nanjing Old City.Through the construction of decision tree model,it quantitatively analyzes the dominant influencing factors of spatial location. At the medium and micro scale, through the multi-temporal spatiotemporal observation of typical stall clusters, the thesis analyzes their development process, operating and spatial differentiation characteristics, explaining the internal dynamics of self-organization evolution from the perspective of inter-individual competition and synergy. Finally, based on the analysis of the self-organization evolution mechanism of street vending, three suitable space governance strategies are proposed. This thesis attempts to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the multi-scale spatiotemporal characteristics of street vending in Nanjing Old City from the perspective of self-organization,revealing its inherent logic of the spontaneous development, flow, evolution and agglomeration,so as to provide a reference for the cognition and spatial governance of street vending in other old cities.
