| As an important public space, street space, especially the alleys where residents conduct their daily activities, can reflect the vitality of residents’ lives and the regional character of urban development. With the rapid development of urbanisation in China, the "car-oriented" mentality is dominating and the vitality of the "human-centred" street space is gradually weakening. In particular, problems of congestion, traffic chaos and poor environmental quality are found in the old urban spaces of dense streets, ultimately leading to a significant decline in the quality of life of the community. In recent years, the concept of ’people-centred’ street design has become a mainstream trend, and a trend in the development of urban space in China, pushing streets towards quality and service.A number of scholars in China have identified this problem and have begun to focus on urban street regeneration, which can make full use of land and space and generate economic benefits, realising the dual value of time and space and revitalising the street. The Western design concept of "shared streets" is of reference value for alleviating the contradiction between people and vehicles, improving the land utilisation rate of streets and activating the vitality of street space. It is hoped that its introduction into Suzhou’s Canglang Street will provide a reference and transformation value for the "people-oriented" transformation of street space in China’s cities. This paper takes the ’shared street’ as the basis for analysis and design, and takes Suzhou’s Canglang Street as the object of study, introducing a holistic approach to the design of the street space and the surrounding spatial environment. The paper is divided into five parts, firstly, the concept of "shared street" and its classic cases of application at home and abroad are studied.Secondly,on the basis of this study,a field study and questionnaire survey are conducted on Canglang Street, the subject of the study,to systematically analyse the regional location and image characteristics of the backstreets and alleys. The results of the study are analysed and summarised in terms of the objective perceptions and subjective feelings of the residents towards the back streets and alleys, and the problems that exist.Through the above analysis, combined with the design characteristics of "shared street",the optimization sharing strategy of the back streets of Canglang Street in four dimensions of ecology, time and space, fairness and restoration is clearly proposed. Finally, the above four dimensions of optimisation and sharing strategies are applied to the spatial design of Canglang Street in Suzhou, and the results of the study are summarised in a detailed spatial design of the back streets and alleys of Canglang. In summary, this study explores the streets of Canglang District,Suzhou, which have certain regional characteristics, and the practice of optimising their landscape design. The design research around the concept of ’shared streets’ is also of great practical value for the regeneration and construction of old street spaces in China. This case study helps to promote the renewal and development of urban streetscape design in China, and provides a useful reference for the construction of a rich and diverse urban public space. |
