| As a product of rapid urban development, the urban village is an integral part of China’s urbanization process that cannot be ignored. In the traditional perspective, urban villages are often seen as negative and marginalized areas of the city, and the large number of informal creation practices within them are often seen as negative, chaotic and disorderly. However, these informal practices of creation have always persisted in the context of urbanization, creating many peculiar and rich spaces that compensate for the lack of spatial function within the urban village and reflect the true aspirations of its residents. At the same time, underneath its crude external form, the informal creation shows a vigorous vitality, which makes the urban village space very dynamic and humane. In recent years, the concept of urban development, including urban villages, has gradually shifted from “incremental development” to “stock development”,which has led to a focus on informal creation based on a “bottom-up” civilian perspective. The study of urban village space from the perspective of informal creation helps to understand the value of informal creation on the one hand, and provides new ideas for the regeneration and development of urban villages on the other. This paper focuses on the urban villages in Beijing, and takes some of the urban villages between the Fourth and Fifth Ring Roads as the main research objects.Through literature research, survey method, case study method and comparative research method,it combines theory with practice and interprets the characteristics of informally created spaces in urban villages from a phenomenological perspective.Firstly,on the basis of a review of theories related to urban villages and informal creation, the spatial types under different forms of formation are identified.Secondly, the general overview of Beijing’s urban villages is sorted out,and the spatial characteristics of Beijing’s urban villages are interpreted from the perspective of informal creation.Through field research on informally created spaces in urban villages, the features of the subject population, spatial relationships and spatial attributes are analyzed, and several typical cases are described in detail, the formation mechanism and influencing factors behind the phenomenon are explored, and the relationship between urban villages and the city is discussed. Finally,on the basis of the above research, the implications of informal creation for urban village regeneration are discussed,i.e.retaining the positive aspects of informal creation for urban village development, avoiding its limitations, incorporating it as a useful supplement to urban village regeneration strategies, and providing specific guidance practices, with a view to contributing to the future development of urban village regeneration and the improvement of the quality and vitality of urban space. |
