The Spatial Evolution Effect Of Xi'an Chengzhong Village And The Study Of Urban Village Integration

As a sub-provincial city and one of the seven central cities in China, Xi'an plays a key role in the "One Belt and One Road" policy implementation. According to the State Council, Xi'an is planned to become the key node city and international metropolis with distinctive historical features by 2020. Since then, the urbanization process in Xi'an has largely accelerated. However, there are still many challenges encountered in the process of Xi'an development, such as under-developed economies and unbalanced local development. Among which the urban village renewal is a question that needs to be evaded.Based on the evolution, renewal, and formation of harmonious community order of urban villages in Xi'an, this study has diagnosed the status quo, identified the challenges and assessed the existing theory of urban village renewal in Xi'an. This study has also implemented a systemic research on the effects of urban village renewal on city development, and explored the background factors on such evolution and effects, in order to form an innovative institutional mode of urban-rural integration. The main conclusions are as follows:(1) The spatial evolution of urban villages in Xi'an has close relationship with the trend of urban expansion. Along with a large number of urban villages transformed into urban communities, the trace of fluid population concentration was close to geographical trace of urban village renewal in Xi'an, and turned to agglomerate in the urban fringe areas.(2) There were three new trends of urban village renewal in Xi'an. First, the purpose of urban village renewal in the urban center has diverted from adapt to urban expansion to fit for the urban plan and raise the image of city. Second, the urban villages renewal in Xi'an also highlighted the amelioration of fragmentation of urban patches, which was evidenced by the raise of the compact coefficient of Xi'an between 2005 and 2010. Third, the importance of study on the sustainable development of urban village renewal was also highly emphasized.(3) The urban village renewal has become the new area in human geography research. The future study on urban village renewal in Xi'an should focus on the mode of multi-type urban village renewal, planning of urban village renewal, communities' development and urbanization problems after urban village renewal.(4) In accordance with the social, economic and environmental inducement and defects of policy system, the urban village renewal in Xi'an should design targeted mode for urban village at different phases, and formulate associate policies to promote urban-rural integration from the micro, meso and macro perspectives, in order to facilitate the harmonious urban village renewal featured by urban-rural integration and orderly administrated, beautiful and security communities.
