Living spaces in East Asia have been used for a long time, such as heated kang, tatami, and ondol. These types of heating equipment have spacious and comfortable surface, and the space they are located in is closely related to people’s usage experience. Therefore, people’s body posture is unrestricted, single space can accommodate multiple behaviors.About their commonalities, author defines this type of space with intensive characteristics as a sitting and sleeping integrated space, such as the kang space in China, the tatami space in Japan, and the ondol room in South Korea. With the development of the times, updates in technology, and changes in people’s lifestyles, traditional sitting and sleeping spaces have gradually been replaced by living room in modern living room. However,in the mature stage of development, living room has also gradually exposing problems such as low space utilization, limited body posture, and lack of storage space. Moreover, with the emergence of small-sized apartments,People’s requirements for the quality of living space have also become higher under area limitations. From this, whether we can trace back to the traditional integrated sitting and sleeping space, whose unique and intensive spatial advantages may be greatly helpful for today’s living space. This article is divided into five chapters,China’s kang room and Japan’s tatami room are the two main lines, which are the most representative in East Asia.Mongolia,North Korea,South Korea, and other countries provide supplementary explanations to explore the intensive spatial advantages of sitting and sleeping integrated spaces.Firstly, from the perspective of plane layout, summarize the plane features of the Kang space in northern China and the tatami space in Japan;Secondly, from the perspective of internal furnishings of China and Japan are divided into flexible furnishings and fixed furnishings, spatial relationships and threedimensional utilization are analyzed based on human functional behavior; In terms of spatial atmosphere, explore its atmospheric characteristics under the influence of plane layout and internal furnishings. Finally, based on the above analysis, the intensive characteristics of the integrated space of sitting and sleeping in China and Japan in terms of plane, furnishings, and atmosphere are summarized. The spatial commonalities inherent under the difference between these, and summmarize the design experiences.Combined with modern practical cases in China and Japan to prove that the integrated space of sitting and sleeping can be applied in modern living rooms. The integrated sitting and sleeping space has rich spatial connotations, and its intensive features fully utilize the space from both two-dimensional and three-dimensional facade directions.Studying this type of space has practical significance for current bedroom space design. This article starts from the perspective of spatial characteristics, and uses the conclusions drawn to fill the gap in the intensive spatial features of the integrated sitting and sleeping space, and explores the possibility of applying this type of spatial characteristics in modern and future applications,Provide a foundation for the research on the current design of small apartment spaces...
