Earthen architecture has a long history and is a classic example of the wisdom and ingenuity of folk artisans and design that remains in the Hexi Corridor. The existence of vernacular architecture and the use of vernacular materials in the Hexi region is a testament to the deep-rooted cultural core of traditional Confucianism’s’ unity of heaven and man’,and has greatly improved the living environment of the population in the Hexi region, which has a special geographical and climatic environment, making it desirable to form special forms of microclimate habitat compounds. At present, raw earth architecture is still widely used in the north-western region of China, but the traditional raw earth materials and techniques have shown certain deviations from the demands of modern architectural development and aesthetics, and there is an urgent need for further research in this field. This paper analyses the development problems faced by traditional earthen building forms and the historical significance and cultural value of the application of earthen materials in the Hexi Corridor;it also analyses the categories of traditional earthen materials in the Hexi Corridor, the differences between traditional and modern earthen materials, and the interface between traditional and modern ramming techniques. It reveals the layout characteristics and the way of construction of raw earth in the ecologically fragile areas of northwest China, and also shows the many advantages of raw earth materials as a building material. It provides design solutions for the construction and development of dwellings in the oasis-edge agglomerations of the desert and arid regions, and provides a solid theoretical basis for proposing strategies to optimise the development of raw earth architecture in the Hexi Corridor region,as well as more specific ways and means to apply raw earth materials in design. The author conducted a survey of a hope school in the Hexi region through field visits and interviews,as well as interviews with local people in Yumen to gather the information needed for the literature and to enhance the understanding of the Hexi region,in order to present a design that meets the needs of the development of traditional earthen architecture materials from a more in-depth and comprehensive perspective. In the light of the increasing desertification in the Hexi region, the project proposes the renovation of the existing vernacular buildings to suit modern life, taking into account the traditional culture, human spirit and living customs of the Hexi region.
