The Hexi Corridor is located in northwestern China, controlling the Western Region in the west and conquering the desert in the north.Since the Western Han Dynasty, the Han emperor developed the western part of the river by means of immigration and settlement, and gradually appeared defensive dock walls, defensive cities and forts. The internal courtyard space and architectural features of defensive fortresses can convey the natural humanities, social economy and regional customs of the region at that time. However, due to various factors, such as accelerated urbanization, changes in production methods, and weak awareness of local governments and villagers, most of the traditional fortified cantonments have disappeared, with only a few remaining in remote rural areas. Therefore,it is very important to study the existing traditional fortified tunzhuang settlements and residential architecture in the context of the general environment,in order to reflect the uniqueness of the settlements and to supplement the research gaps. This paper takes the few remaining traditional defensive tunzhuang in Xinba Town,Hexi Corridor as the research object, and analyzes and researches its settlement and dwelling level by means of documentary collection, field survey and comparative analysis.Firstly, the article elaborates on the background of the topic, the current situation of the study, the identification of relevant concepts, and the purpose and significance of the study.Secondly, the natural and socio-cultural backgrounds of the defensive fortress and the traditional settlement in the Hexi region are summarized through literature, historical books and genealogies to lay a theoretical foundation. On the basis of the above,a number of typical defensive tunzhuang settlements are selected through field research:the site selection factors are analyzed, and the generation and evolution of the settlements are studied with time as a clue, and the current spatial pattern of the settlements is analyzed in a hierarchical and structured manner, and finally compared with defensive military fortresses and new rural features to highlight the uniqueness of the tunzhuang settlements;typical defensive tunzhuang are selected, and the Through the analysis of examples,we extract the prototypes of traditional dwellings, summarize their development and evolution patterns and their reasons, and finally compare and analyze the similarities and differences of the defensive dwellings in the western part of the river. Finally,we summarize the construction strategies and values of defensive tunzhuang settlements and dwellings. In practice, the study analyzes the typical characteristics of defensive tunzhuang settlements and dwellings through field surveys, summarizes the wisdom and problems of their construction at the settlement and dwelling levels, and provides theoretical references and targeted suggestions for the inheritance and development of defensive tunzhuang settlements and dwellings on the basis of the new needs of the new era.
