Research On Urban Planning And Construction Of Wuxi City And It’s Scenic Area In Modern Era(1912-1937)

The interaction and integration of urban with suburban Shanshui space,was one of the important features displayed in the modernization of Jiangnan cities,which in turn had contributed to the formation of modern scenic area.It is therefore important to clarify the influence of the scenery in the modernization process of traditional cities in Jiangnan region.This research selected Wuxi,a typical scenic city and historical city,as a case to analyze its development process of urban planning and scenic area construction in 1912-1937.The research was developed in the following sections.The first part(Chapters I)stated the background and identified related concepts.The second part(Chapters II)composed the spatial characteristics and the distribution of historical sites of Wuxi(before 1912),which formed the basis of urban planning and scenic area construction.The third part(Chapters III & IV)was divided into two chronological phases: ’1912-1928’ and ’1928-1937’,and analyzed the formation of Wuxi’s scenic area and its construction in the context of modern municipal exploration and urban planning.The fourth part(Chapter V)further analyzed the flow of ideas and the actual impact caused by the urban planning and scenic area construction in Wuxi.Through the above analysis,this research summarized three main conclusions:firstly,that Wuxi was early in recognizing the importance of scenic resources for urban development;secondly,that Wuxi was early in forming scenic area and constructing them in conjunction with the the city;and thirdly,that the formation of scenic area had limited physical spatial impact,a limitation due to the subject of implementation.It is expected that this research will form the basis for research on the conservation and development of the Wuxi’s scenery.
