Orhan Pamuk(1952-)is one of the most important contemporary Turkish writers. He has published nine novels and won the Nobel Prize for literature. The objects in Pamuk’s novels are carefully arranged and play an important role in narration, which is consistent with the theory of thing-narrative which has sprung up in recent years.Based on this theory, this paper discusses the role of objects in Pamuk’s novels in narration. This paper holds that the function of object in narration can be divided into two dimensions:the degree of influencing plot and the degree of humanization. This paper is divided into chapters according to the degree of the degree of influencing plot, and another degree runs through the analysis of the full text. Therefore, the objects in Pamuk’s novels can be divided into four categories:the objects as the narrators, the objects as the promoters of the plot, the object as the obstacle of the plot, and the objects as the core of the plot. The first chapter of this paper discusses the objects as the narrators. It is impossible for a thing to make a sound as a narrator in the real world,so the reader will not presuppose the voice of the narrator. This kind of voice beyond the preset is the spiritual voice of things, which is different from the rational voice of human beings. It can help human beings reflect on the missing parts of the objective world. The second chapter of this paper discusses the objects as the promoters of the plot, and divides the things into the things in the Turkish cultural field, the things in the Western cultural field and the natural things. The first two not only promote the conflict between the East and the West, which is the usual contradictory movement in Pamuk’s novels, but also impact people’s cognition of the polarization and emptiness of the East and the West through their own complexity.Snow as the representative of natural things can promote the plot, they have the ability that human beings can’t reach, and affect human life. The third chapter of this paper discusses the object as the obstacle of the plot. This paper holds that it has two purposes:one is to achieve the aesthetic effect of Hazen, and the other is to promote pluralistic philosophical thinking.Hazen needs goods to bear, which makes emotion more concrete. In addition, objects also carry Pamuk’s multiple philosophical thinking, including the deconstruction and construction of the meaning of life, the anxiety in the face of naked self, the definition of self and other, and so on.The fourth chapter of this paper discusses the objects as the core of the plot. This chapter focuses on the novel Museum of Innocence, because only in this book, collection and display of objects become the main plot. This chapter explores the situation of things as the carrier of life meaning,as the display of class,as the influence of things themselves on the plot.Under the guidance of the thing-narrative this paper explores the role of things in the narration of Pamuk’s novels. This will help to clarify how the narration is carried out in Pamuk’s novels, and more comprehensively understand the theme and aesthetic style of Pamuk’s novels. |
