Research On The Construction Strategy Of Chinese Image In The Independent China-related Documentary Of Discovery In 21st

For a long time,due to the unequal international media order,the image of China has always been constantly changed in the Western media’s shaping based on their positions and values,leading to the misconstruction and misinterpretation of China’s image to an extent.Through the improvement of China’s comprehensive national strength,seizing the right to speak,and rectifying the image of China has become an immediate task.The documentary,known as the "National Album",has unique advantages in shaping the image of the country and promoting cross-cultural communication,and has gained more and more recognition from domestic and foreign scholars.Based on this,this paper takes the China-related documentaries independently produced by the Discovery Channel in the United States as the research object,and uses content analysis,text analysis and comparative analysis to conduct in-depth analysis from the documentary narrative expression,audio-visual expression,and conceptual expression,reaching the conclusion about how these documentaries construct China’s national image,finding out the problems and deep-seated reasons behind it,which will provide certain enlightenment for future documentaries to better shape and spread the national image.Through the research,it is found that the independent China-related documentary of the Discovery Channel mainly used themes choice,typical issues,narrative expression,audiovisual language,and conceptual expression in the process of constructing China’s image.With the ideology and the subjective position mixing into it,the objective presentation of China’s image has been affected to a certain extent,leaving a lot of space for imagination,which results in a misunderstanding of China’s image.The presentation of China’s image from the perspective of the other is not only the result of the guidance of media concepts,but also the influence of multiple factors such as complex politics,economic situation and culture.Besides,it is a psychological projection of seeking self-identification internally and rooting in stereotypes and prejudices externally.Analyzing China’s image in Discovery Channel’s independent China-related documentaries and the reasons behind it will help us rationally understand the misunderstanding of China’s image by the Western media,and propose targeted countermeasures;on the other hand,by learning from the experience of advanced Western documentaries,we can enhance the cross-cultural communication capabilities of Chinese local documentaries,and turn "others’ shaping " into "self-shaping",presenting a true and objective image of China proactively.
