Translation Quality Assessment is an important and rapidly growing subfield of Translation Studies focusing on the relationship between the source text and the target text.In recent years,a number of scholars attempted to produce a reliable model of such evaluation, yet the nature of translation will always leave the room for further development. This thesis firstly presents how this subfield evolved and describes the most prominent approaches to TQA since the 1950s.It shows a variety of perspectives from different approaches, including Catford’s translation shift,Reiss’s text types and Skopos theory among others. It also presents the issues in designing and applying such a model. One of the most reliable models of TQA was developed by Juliane House and her method is applied in this thesis to assess the quality of Chinese translation of Spencer Johnson’s Who Moved My Cheese? The fundamental concept for House’s approach, described in"Translation Quality Assessment:Past and Present"(2015),is equivalence and recontextualization in translation. She proposes two strategies:overt and covert translation, the latter requires the use of cultural filter. The model also incorporates the system of transitivity,as well as Hallidayan register concepts of field, tenor and mode.On the basis of the source text and the target text comparison, the statement of quality is produced, categorizing the translation as overt or covert,as well as showing its mismatches and strategies used by the translator. Finally,in addition to the analysis of the quality of translation, this thesis also attempts at placing the target text on the spectrum of Venuti’s domestication and foreignization.
