A Study On Sanmao’s Ecological Thoughts

The Chinese literary circle witnessed a period of “Sanmao Craze” during the 1970s to 1980s,which has been viewed as an important phenomenon in contemporary Chinese literary history.In her prose,Sanmao wrote down her concerns over nature,the solicitude for human society and the respect for individual’s life value,distinctly showing her ecological thoughts.And this thought stayed all through her life.“Child Sanmao” was called “trouble-making kid” and went through seven years of autism,when her ecological nature sprouted.Then “Youth Sanmao” started her vagrancy career,breathing with nature,feeling fickleness of human nature and completely displaying her ecological thoughts in her writing.“Middle-aged Sanmao” went back to Taiwan and explored the ecological meaning by struggling against the life.Under the influence of childhood,the accumulation and impact of diverse cultures as well as her honor to life value,Sanmao’s ecological thought took on a distinctive look.For nature,she held the belief that “everything is contented in quiet observation” to admire everything on the earth.For society,she valued “friendship between gentlemen is like water” a lot to maintain an appropriate distance between each other.And for individuals,she fought against “self-pity” with “self-love” to guard the freedom which she valued most.Sanmao’s unique ecological thought played such an important role in the rise of the“Sanmao Craze” that it became one of the main reasons of the power of her works.Nowadays,with the increasing prominence of ecological danger,the ecological philosophy that Sanmao had enlightened should be concerned.And the significance of Sanmao’s works was brought out owing to the correspondence with the era.
