The Translation Strategies Of Children’s Literature Based On The Skopos Theory

This thesis aims to explore how skopos theory can be applied to guide the translation strategies of children’s literature.The source text,Sammy and Tee,is an adventure story of two birds written by the Zelanian author J.P.Smith.It presents exciting scenes,striking characters,and picturesque scenery of New Zealand.The skopos theory of Hans J.Vermeer believes that,the purpose of translation determines how to translate,and this is called the skopos rule.Meanwhile,the capacity of readers shall be considered to make sure the text can be fully comprehended,which is the coherence rule.At last,the fidelity rule requires translators to create an equal reading experience with the source text.Based on the three basic rules of skopos theory,this thesis sums up three purposes of the translation and strategies used to achieve them:(1)The purpose of comprehension.To make the text easy for Chinese children to read,long sentences are divided into short and simple ones;the implicit logic has been clarified.(2)The purpose of enjoyment.To attract children’s interest in reading,modal particles,onomatopoeic words and reduplicative words are widely used,as well as a variety of verbs and rhetorical devices.(3)The purpose of education.The native plants and animals in New Zealand are briefly introduced in the footnotes.Descriptions of natural scenery are well-designed to restore the aesthetic of the source text.
