Children's literature has a certain educational function.Children's thoughts,emotions and mental outlook will be influenced by children's literary works and children will gradually form their own cognition of things.The development of children's literature in China is relatively late compared with the western countries.With the increasing demand for children's literature,the importance of children's literature translation is becoming obvious.A Northern Light is written by Jennifer Donnelly.This book is based on the memory of author's family and friends,which tells the story of 16-year-old Mattie leaving her hometown for her college dream.Though Mattie grows up in a poor family,she still works hard and takes every opportunity to go to college,which inspires readers to study hard and pursue their dreams.A Northern Light was awarded the Carnegie Medal.It is known as an excellent book for children and young people to read.As this novel has not been translated into Chinese,the translator decides to do it for Chinese children.Skopos theory has been widely used in various translation activities since it was put forward.The three rules of skopos theory(skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule)have realistic guiding significance for both literary translation and non-literary translation.For the translation of children's literature,skopos theory can guide the translator to attain the purpose of ensuring information transmission,and help children understand and benefit from the translation.This thesis discusses the translation practice of children's literature under the guidance of skopos theory.The translation report consists of description of the translation task,translation process,case studies,and summary.
