Depression is the world’s most common mental health problem, with more than 350 million people worldwide currently suffering from it,according to the World Health Organization.Hence it is necessary to study and popularize the pathogenesis of depression. The source text of this translation report is extracted from the third chapter of Psychological:Why Mental Health Goes Wrong and How to Make Sense of It,written by Dean Burnett,a British neuroscientist and author. It describes the nature, symptoms and effects of depression, brain activities during the onset, and some treatments for depression. As a popular science(PS)text,it possesses both the picturesque description of literary texts and the precise diction of sci-tech texts,so the choice of translation theory and strategies should be based on the distinctive text features of the source text.According to the three main functions of language,Newmark’s text typology theory divides text types into three kinds: expressive, informative and vocative texts, holding that expressive texts are inclined to apply semantic translation strategy, while informative and vocative texts tend to employ communicative translation strategy. It has an advantage and appropriateness in guiding the translation practice of the source text, for the literary text features of which reflect the particularities of expressive texts, the sci-tech text features of which mirror the hallmarks of informative texts, and the feature of popularizing knowledge to the reader of which as a PS text shows the characteristics of vocative texts. Therefore, under the guidance of the theory,a combination of communicative translation strategy and semantic translation strategy is suited to the translation of the source text, the former as the primary and the latter as the secondary.Based on that consideration, the report analyzes the specific translation methods of the source text from lexical, syntactical and textual levels. On the lexical level, the translation methods of technical terms,non-technical words and phrases are stated;on the syntactical level, the emphasis is placed on the translation methods of passive sentences and long sentences;on the textual level, the priority is given to cohesion and coherence in discourse. The employment of relevant translation strategies and methods in the report can bring new perspectives and cases to the practice of popular science translation(PST)and facilitate the understanding and application of the adopted translation theory. In addition, the target text can also improve Chinese readers’ knowledge of depression and draw their attention to mental diseases. This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is Task Description, which gives an overview of the background, objectives and significance of this translation project, the source text and its author,as well as the structure of the report.Chapter Two is Process Description, talking about the whole translation process in three stages.Chapter Three is Theoretical Basis, introducing Newmark’s text typology theory and its application in translation.Chapter Four is Case Analysis, making a detailed analysis of the practical application of the specific translation methods in the translation task from lexical, syntactical and textual levels.Chapter Five is Conclusion, recording some reflections on the translation practice and giving corresponding suggestions. |
