This report is based on the E-C translation of the first two chapters of Jewell Parker Rhodes’ s Black Brother,Black Brother. This book subtly captures the pain of racial injustice for a 12-year-old black boy Donte attending an all-white prep school outside Boston. As the story unfolds,it talks about how the little black boy bravely fights against racism and bullies by exercising himself in fencing.Adaptation Theory is a linguistic theory first proposed by a Belgian linguist Jef Verschueren in his book Understanding Pragmatics in 1999.According to this theory, communicators should constantly make choices from aspects of contexts and linguistic structures for the purpose of achieving the communicative intentions.Furthermore, this process can make sense of the three properties of language: variability, negotiability and adaptability, while among them, the adaptability is the most significant factor.Within the theoretical basis of the Adaptation theory, translation is the process of making dynamic adaptations to the linguistic structure and contexts of the source text,as well as a process of constantly making choices.Translators should dynamically adapt to both of them to meet the communication needs of both parties to the maximum extent.Under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory, the translator has finished the translation task of Black Brother,Black Brother(excerpts). In this report, the translator mainly analyzes the translation practice from the perspective of structural objects of adaptability and communicative contexts of adaptability.Through specific practice, the author concludes that translators should find the information gaps between the source language and target language and then flexibly employ appropriate strategies and skills to compensate them under the premise of conforming to the linguistic structure.By doing this, the target text can reproduce the communicative purposes and intention of the source text to a maximum extent.Besides,in light of a large number of characters in Black Brother,Black Brother,it requires the translator to precisely grasp the social relationships and mental states of different characters from the aspects of the mental world, physical world, and social world of both parties in communication,so as to let the target readers have a better understanding of the plots and character portrayal in the original text. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the overall description of the translation task, involving the introduction to the source text, the author, the significance and motivation of this report as well as the organization. The second chapter summarizes the process of the translation task from the perspective of pre-translation preparation, whiletranslation, and proofreading procedures in the post-translation stage. The third chapter is the theoretical basis, including the introduction of the Adaptation theory as well as its adoption in translation. The fourth chapter demonstrates detailed text analyses of the translation of Black Brother,Black Brother. And the fifth chapter extracts the reflections and limitations of this report.
