An Analysis Of Dialogue Translation In Brother Carl From The Perspective Of Contextual Adaptation Theory

Brother Carl,directed by Sontag,is a film scrip whose content mainly includes scene description and dialogues.Dialogues occupy a large part in the film scrip.Because of dialogues’ characteristics of diversity and flexibility,translators should choose various translation strategies and methods accordingly.While translating,translators should consider not only the time and the place the dialogues happen at and in,but also characters’nature,emotions and intention,which may be different when the characters are in different places and face different persons.This is consistent with the psychological world adaptation,the physical world adaptation and the social world adaptation emphasized by the contextual adaptation theory.Therefore,this article is about an analysis of dialogue translation in Brother Carl based on the guidance of the contextual adaptation theory and some representative translation cases of dialogues are elaborated in it.It is hoped that the translation can achieve a good communication effect and highlight the important guiding significance of contextual adaptation theory to the dialogue translation by comparing the two versions of translation which are and are not based on the guidance of the theory.It is also hoped that the article can provide a new perspective for the study of dialogue translation,a useful supplement for the domestic research of Sontag and a reference for the later filming of the Chinese version of Brother Carl.The methods of literature research and case analysis are combined to complete this paper.Firstly,it is found that the translated text Brother Carl can be divided into two main parts:scene description and dialogues by reading the whole text carefully.Then,the dialogue part is selected for analysis.And,after reading the books related to the translation of the characters’ conversations,it is found that the theory of contextual adaptation is closely related to dialogue translation.Through the method of case analysis,the translation of dialogue in Brother Carl is explored from the perspective of contextual adaptation theory.The following revelations about dialogue translation are summarized as followed:contextual adaptation theory can be a good guidance for dialogue translation.While translating dialogues,translators should try to comply with the characters’psychological world,social world and physical world,to better convey the meaning of dialogues.
