A Report On C-E Translation Of University Website News

The university website is an official online platform established by universities and colleges,covering information on every aspect of campus life,strengthening information exchanges and helping share open educational resources.Against the backdrop of globalization and informatization,an increasingly growing number of Chinese universities and colleges have set up their English-version websites and improved Chinese-English translation of website news,so as to attract more international students to study in China,enhance their global reputation and boost exchanges between China and foreign countries.Therefore,much attention should be paid to render high-quality university website news.This report is based on the Chinese-English translation task of twenty pieces of website news of School of Management,Shandong University(around 17,000 Chinese words).The news is rich in content,including academic events,campus life and school-enterprise cooperation.During the translation process,the translator encountered many difficulties like general terms,culture-loaded words,words with implied meanings,complicated and run-on sentences and long texts without explicit coherence and logic.Taking features of news reports and target audience into account,the translator chose explicitation as the theoretical framework,so as to deliver accurate,explicit and reader-friendly news translation.Under the theoretical support of explicitation,the translator summarized concrete translation strategies to solve translation problems and offered relevant examples at the lexical,sentence and textual levels.At the lexical level,specification of general terms,clarification of implied meaning in figures of speech and addition of cultural information or general world knowledge were applied to ascertain the meaning of words.At the sentence level,the translator used the restructuring of clauses and sentences and amplification to follow the syntactic rules of the target language and clarify the information contained in the original sentences.At the textual level,the translator adopted lexical cohesion and conjunctions to manifest logic and achieve coherence in translated news reports.In doing so,explicitation has been achieved in the whole translation of university website news.It is concluded that explicitation has provided useful guidance for this translation task.Since there are few studies on the applicability of explicitation in university website news in China,the translator hopes that the translation report can offer a new perspective to this field.Meanwhile,it is hoped that this report can provide guidance for C-E translation of similar website news,making other translators aware of how to employ translation methods and techniques of explicitation to clarify meaning and logic,and produce understandable and fluent translations.
