Chinese characters are treasures of Chinese culture,and the teaching of Chinese characters is an important component of international Chinese language education.In the practice of international Chinese character teaching,instructors often use a series of teaching methods such as the component teaching method and the Six-Character Primer teaching method,which greatly benefit many Chinese language learners in the process of learning Chinese characters.However,due to the uniqueness of Chinese characters themselves,there are still problems in Chinese character teaching such as long teaching cycles,high difficulty,low learner interest,and poor self-study initiative.In the era of technological development and people’s habit of using smartphones and other devices for learning,Chinese character learning apps have emerged as a new way of learning that is widely used by learners around the world,and can more flexibly meet learners’ diverse learning needs.Among the many Chinese character learning apps,Pleco,as an app with a large user base and comprehensive Chinese character learning functions,is the main focus of this article.This article combines the development background of Chinese character learning apps,and studies how Pleco can be applied in classroom teaching to better help teachers and students solve the problems of Chinese character teaching.Through the study of how Pleco can be integrated with task-based teaching methods,game-based teaching methods,and how it can assist in different aspects of Chinese character teaching,students can better engage in independent learning during the pre-class preview and post-class review stages.It can also help teachers improve the interest level and promote positive interactions in the Chinese character teaching process.Additionally,it can further enhance Pleco’s role as a Chinese dictionary,laying a solid foundation for learners to preview,consolidate,and expand their knowledge.After applying Pleco to Chinese character teaching practice,a survey was conducted to sort out the advantages and disadvantages of using Pleco for Chinese character teaching practice.Teachers and students expressed that although using Pleco in teaching provided solutions to the difficulties of Chinese character teaching,there were still issues such as difficulties in classroom management,weak execution,and limited teaching effectiveness due to insufficient definition and example sentences in Pleco.In response to these problems,the author reflected on and provided optimization suggestions from the perspectives of user beliefs,usage methods,and Pleco’s own development.For users,the author suggested that teachers should improve their own level,pay attention to student needs,clarify the functions of Pleco,utilize Chinese character teaching methods,and better leverage Pleco’s auxiliary role in Chinese character teaching,encouraging students to cultivate their own habits of learning Chinese characters with the help of Pleco.As for Pleco itself,targeted optimization suggestions were proposed in areas such as improving the optimization and upgrading of definition and example sentences,and making full use of the carrier advantages.We hoped that based on these suggestions,Pleco can be better applied in teaching practice to help teachers and students effectively learn Chinese characters and provide a reference for enriching international Chinese character teaching methods in the future.
