The adverb of range is an important part of speech in adverbs.It is also an important and difficult point in international Chinese education.Regarding scope adverbs,many studies have been conducted on Chinese ontology,but not much from the perspective of international Chinese teaching,especially regarding words with similar meanings in general scope adverbs and limited scope adverbs.There are many differences between Chinese and Croatian,and it is difficult for Croatian students to learn Chinese.In actual teaching,it has been found that students at the Confucius Institute at the University of Zagreb often make various errors in the use of scope adverbs.To help students better grasp the use of adverbs,it is necessary to study the errors that occur when they acquire scope adverbs.This article first summarizes the ontological knowledge of scope adverbs and examines the situation of scope adverbs in Chinese teaching syllabi and typical Chinese materials.Then,in the form of a test,the errors made by intermediate-level students at the Confucius Institute at the University of Zagreb in scope adverbs were investigated,and the overall situation of the test results and the results of four different types of questions were analyzed and summarized.By analyzing the students’ erroneous sentences,eight types of errors related to the selected scope adverbs were identified and the reasons for the errors were analyzed.Then,a teaching design was conducted for the selected scope adverbs,and classes were taught in two previously tested classes,followed by a post test.The results were compared and analyzed with the pretest results,and the examination situations for the four types of questions were analyzed.Finally,specific and feasible teaching suggestions were provided based on the test results and reasons for the errors.The research findings were as follows: First,through the pretest,it was found that students made many errors,mainly including errors of substitution,addition,omission,and misplacement.Second,the reasons for these errors include negative transfer from their native language,over-generalization in the target language,inadequacies in the syllabus and textbook content,and insufficient teacher qualifications and teaching methods.Third,students have a relatively good grasp of the use of general scope adverbs,but they need to improve their understanding of limited scope adverbs.Fourth,based on the results of the two tests,it can be concluded that students mastered the use of scope adverbs after the teaching intervention,and there was an improvement in test scores.Errors in “ Multiple choice questions with only one correct option” and “ True or False questions” were relatively few,whereas errors in “ Write sentences by arranging the given words in correct order” and “ Translation” were more common.Based on the above conclusions,the following recommendations are proposed:students should use appropriate learning strategies and actively utilize extracurricular resources;teachers should improve their qualifications and teaching methods and strengthen pragmatic teaching;the syllabus and textbooks should be supplemented and revised,with textbooks emphasizing review and innovation.In summary,the meanings of scope adverbs are abstract and complex,and there are still many errors in the students’ acquisition of these adverbs at the Confucius Institute at the University of Zagreb.Both students and teachers need to improve and enhance themselves,while syllabi and textbooks require ongoing refinement.
