There are a large number of missing components in Chinese,and the absence of components in sentences affects Chinese learners’ comprehension of sentences.Current scholarship mostly deals with the absence of components by omission or zero-form referents.Song Ruo(2022)proposed the Clause Complex Theory,which provides a new explanation for the the Chinese paratactic phenomenon through the construction of Naming-Telling Structure and the Naming-sharing Structure Mechanism.This paper attempts to introduce it into the field of International Chinese Education to answer the following questions:How do Japanese Chinese learners determine the Naming of a sentence when they understand it?What are the differences between different types of Naming determination?Does the learning of basic concepts of the Clause Complex Theory help improve Chinese learners’ awareness of component sharing?In this study,Chinese Naming is divided into 6 categories:topic Naming and non-topic Naming of Branch Mode,verb-object Naming and preposition-object Naming of New-branch Mode,Post-position Mode Naming,and Confluence Mode Naming.Teaching basic concepts of Clause Complex Theory for Japanese Chinese learners and designing test materials for Naming determination testing.Through thought-aloud experiments and interviews,the experimental results were analyzed.The results shows that:1.Japanese Chinese learners have a basic awareness of Component Sharing.The accuracy rate of the overall Naming determination is high,about 90%,but the accuracy rate of different types of Naming is different.Among them,the correct rate of the Branch Mode Naming,the verb-object Naming of New Branch Mode,and the Post-position Mode Naming are 92%,100%and 97%respectively;The preposition-object Naming in New-branch Mode is the lowest,at 78%.2.The basis for Naming determining is the understanding of word meaning,sentence meaning and syntactic structure.There are mainly two strategies for determining the Naming of the Branch Mode and the Post-positioning Mode:(1)looking forward/backward for the missing Naming,determined the target Naming as the closest one that fit the semantic characteristics of the missing Naming;(2)determining the Naming by the sentence meaning and Common sense.The difficulty in determining Preposition-object Namings lies in the understanding of the prepositions before the Naming.The Confluence Mode involves the sharing of Naming and the tail of Telling,so the structure is more complex,and the sentence length is usually longer,so it is more difficult to determine the Confluence Mode Namings.3.Learning the basic concepts of Clause Complex Theory helps students to correctly determine Namings.The test scores of the experimental group and the reference group had borderline significant differences.The analysis of the think-aloud transcription text showed that the experimental group could identify some component sharing modes and used them foe Naming determination.The learning effect was evident in the Confluence Mode Naming determination.This study demonstrates and analyzes Japanese intermediate and advanced Chinese learners’ situation and characteristics of Chinese Naming determination.Practice has proved that the theory of Clause Complexes helps to enhance learners’ awareness of sentence components sharing,and is of great significance for accurately understanding sentence meaning and further improving Chinese reading ability. |
