A Report On The E-C Translation Of How The Steel Was Tempered(Excerpts)

This translation practice report is based on the English translation of the novel How The Steel Was Tempered which the author began to translate in August 2022.The selected cases are mainly from the first three chapters in the part two of the novel,which include the most well-known passages in the novel,such as the part about the Bolshevik comrades building the railroad and the famous quote "Man’s dearest possession is life." The original text describes how the communists fought before and after the October Revolution,with impassioned and vivid language.Therefore,the translator encountered many difficulties in the process of finishing this job.In the process of translating the novel,the author made inquiries about the background information of the novel and enriched the lack of information in the English translation through the film and television adaptations of the novel,allowing the author to understand the specific content represented by some culturally loaded words in the original text.After completing the translation of the novel,the translator selected some cases and chose to review this work using Li Changshuan’s "Comprehension,Expression,and Adaptation"(CEA)framework.In terms of comprehension,the translator should take into account the writing background of the original text to avoid common sense errors and ensure the accuracy of the translation.In terms of expression,the translator should adjust the combination of information in the original text or use four-character idioms so that the translation does not cause information loss after being translated.In terms of adaptation,the translator should take into account the difference between the source language and the target language,and use approaches such as amplification and omission to ensure the coherence and readability of target language.The purpose of this report is to summarize the translator’s experience,to help improve translation skills and professionalism,and to provide reference for the translation of similar literary works.
