Subtitle Translation Strategies Of Sisters Who Make Waves Season 3 From The Perspective Of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

Chinese reality programs have achieved some notable gains in foreign markets.Sisters Who Make Waves produced by Mango TV,is a Chinese reality show,featuring female celebrities.It garnered popularity after being introduced in several nations and then chosen as one of the Top 20 Programs with Excellent Overseas Influence.Its effective cross-cultural dialogue is made possible through subtitles in a variety of languages.This paper probes into subtitle translation of reality shows that domestic research is lacking.The study takes the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis,which covers semiotic resources in domains such as auditory and visual,in addition to the text itself.The theory matches the features of reality shows as typical audiovisual products where different symbols interact with subtitles and aid in message delivery.Based on the multimodal discourse analysis,this paper studies the subtitle translation of the third season of Sisters Who Make Waves through multimodal relations.It discusses the theory’s applicability in reality shows,analyzes modalities and their relationships and uses examples to demonstrate translation strategies.This paper conducts a qualitative case study,discusses how modal relations affect subtitle strategies from the perspective of complementary and non-complementary relationships,and draws the following conclusions.First,visual,audio,and linguistic modes construct both complementary and non-complementary relations.Linguistic mode is the primary among various modes.The communication is at its strongest under enhancement relations.Second,translation strategies are more diverse where multiple modes complement each other,whereas information processing is restricted to the language level as all modes except language are redundant.Notably under enhancement relations,the subtitle translation adopts specification,addition,omission,and use of punctuation to overcome the spatial-temporal constraints of reality shows to achieve efficient cross-cultural communication.
