A Study Of Inter-semiotic Shifts By The Approach Of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

As an audiovisual text,subtitle translation involves multiple modalities including text,images,sound,and their relationships.However,in the field of inter-semiotic shifts and multimodal analysis,few studies chose interview programs as their research target.The thesis uses a multimodal discourse analysis method to classify inter-semiotic shifts in the sample film of Leaders Talk,a high-level TV interview produced by CCTV and CGTN in 2022.By studying the practice of subtitle translation in Leaders Talk,the thesis hopes to further explore the framework of inter-semiotic shifts and contribute to better presenting China to the world and telling China’s stories.The thesis aims at classifying inter-semiotic shifts and studying the common effects and possible reasons.An adjusted model was introduced by the author and a new column of "shot code" was added to study the effects of camera language in the multimodal analysis.The author also updated the model previous researchers proposed and analyzed 21 cases using the modified framework.Five categories were identified,namely "Addition","Omission","Replacement","Compensation",and "Typographic Transformation".Sixteen subcategories were found.In addition,the thesis explored some of the common effects of inter-semiotic shifts:emphasis,supplements,explanation,and segmentation.Possible reasons for shifts included cultural differences,loss of information and emotion,and credibility requirements.The research updated the framework of inter-semiotic shifts and added shot code analysis in the multimodal framework.It also filled the gap in the interview genre in the field of multimodal discourse analysis.
