Reading,as the basis for listening,speaking,writing,viewing and other language activities,is the key to developing students’ language competence.English Curriculum Criteria for Regular High School(2017 Edition,revised in 2020)put forward higher requirements for senior high school English reading.However,in the traditional reading class,students are in a passive state,neglecting the cultivation of students’ thinking and reading ability.As a new teaching mode,Question Chain is a series of highly effective and logical questions.Question Chain Teaching Mode can provide an effective way for the cultivation of students’ thinking quality and reading ability.This study applied the Question Chain Teaching Mode to the English reading teaching in senior high school,aiming to explore the following two questions:(1)How to apply the Question Chain Teaching Mode to English reading teaching in senior high school?(2)What are the effects of the Question Chain Teaching Mode on senior high school students’ English reading ability?In order to address the above mentioned two questions,a 12-week action research was conducted.There are 52 senior high school Grade Two students from Z middle school in Huizhou,Guangdong province,participating in this study.Before the action research,the author conducted reading tests and questionnaires among students to develop an action plan.The first round of research was based on Bloom’s Cognitive Objective Taxonomy and Pei Song’s Question Chain Teaching Mode.After completing the first round of action research,the author analyzed the problems and made adjustments.In the second round of research,based on Bloom’s Cognitive Objective Taxonomy,Pei Song’s Question Chain Teaching Mode and Scaffolding Theory,the author adjusted the preparation and presentation orders before presenting questions and the way to design a concept map after reading.After two rounds of action research,SPSS 26.0 was employed to analyze the collected data and discuss the influence of Question Chain Teaching Mode on students’ reading ability.The results show that the Question Chain Teaching Mode should be implemented in three steps.First,teachers present the Question Chain then students draw the concept map and finally,teacher and students sort out the clues of the article together;Question Chain Teaching Mode has a positive impact on students’ reading ability,in particular,there is a great improvement in reasoning judgment and summarizing the main idea ability.To further promote the effective application of Question Chain Teaching Mode in senior high school English reading teaching,the author drew the following implications: attention should be paid to the reasonable setting of the difficulty of the questions,the individual differences of students and cooperation with a variety of teaching activities.It is hoped that this teaching experiment can provide a reference for the application of the Question Chain Teaching Mode in senior high school English reading teaching.
