A Study On Core-Competency-Based English Reading Teaching In Senior High School

In order to adapt to the development of the new era,the hot word “core competency” has echoed in the sky above China’s basic education,and the “core competency in English subject” has also pointed out the direction for the development of basic English education in China.The researches on core competency in English subject have been in full swing in recent years,which reflects that the researches on core competency not only serve as an inevitable requirement of the new curriculum reform,but also an urgent need for theoretical research and practical research in the current competency-based education.Based on Theory of Multiple Intelligences and Theory of Humanism,this study respectively adopts classroom observation,interviews and questionnaires to study the implementation of English core competency in high school English reading teaching.The classroom observation method was used to record the real situation of 4 classes in Grade Two.And the interview method was used to investigate the English reading teaching of 4 teachers.200 students from four classes and 40 English teachers in the whole school were investigated by questionnaires and tried to answer the following two questions:(1)What core competencies are implemented in English reading teaching in senior high schools?(2)What factors have influenced the implementation of core competencies in the process of English reading teaching in senior high schools?By analyzing the collected data,the results have shown as follows:1.English teachers in high schools have initially formed the core competency concept of English subject in teaching and can consciously implement it into English reading teaching.In implementing the core competency of English subject,language ability is still regarded as the focus of training English teachers in high schools.Regarding cultural awareness,teachers can explain the corresponding cultural background knowledge according to the theme.However,they will still feel difficult when sublimating the theme in combination with the culture.Instructional activities fostering students’ critical and creative thinking could be better designed.There are relatively fewer activities to cultivate students’ independent learning ability and reflection ability,and they do not help students develop good English learning habits.2.The primary elements that have an impact on teachers’ implementation of the cultivation of core competency in English subject are listed as follows:(1)examination-oriented education for further education;(2)schools and education departments fail to pay enough attention to the New Curriculum Standards;(3)teachers’ understanding of core competency is not deep enough,and they fail to analyze the reading texts deeply;(4)students’ inherent passive learning habits.Based on the above findings,this study puts forward the following suggestions for teaching : First,teachers should further improve their teaching concepts and take the cultivation and education of core competency in English subject as an essential task for cultivating morality and cultivating people.Second,update the contents of the teaching materials according to the new curriculum standards and the specific requirements of core competency.Third,teachers should continuously improve teaching methods from multiple angles and strive to achieve the implementation of core competency.At last,students should change their learning style and cultivate core competency as an essential means to attain all-around self-development.
