| According to the cultural translation theory,translation is equal to a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communication activity that transfers the meaning conveyed by one language and culture to another.Liu Miqing believes that culture and translation closely relate to each other.In order to carry out effective cultural translation,the primary task is to completely comprehend the cultural information in the source language.Folktales are a treasure of traditional Chinese culture,illustrating both the country’s vast history and its vibrant folk culture.The research of C-E translation of cultural essays can not only enrich the techniques of cultural translation but also help spread traditional Chinese culture to the world.Therefore,the translator of this report chooses two volumes from Chinese Folktales Collection written by Ke Yang as translation practice material from Chinese into English.The straightforward but vivid language,complex but intricate storyline,vivid characters,and a magical imagination expose to readers the origins of various folk customs and lives,histories,consciousness,psychology and culture of different ethnic groups,as well as Chinese people’s wishes and aspirations for a better life.The English translation of these tales can be a bridge to communicate the ethnic characteristics and cultures in the folk tales to English-speaking world.Based on the translation practice and Liu’s cultural translation theory,this report analyzes how to better deal with the effective transformation of cultural information in translation and strategies.The report focuses on ethnic culture psychology,culture information and language style contained in the source text,and summarizes the translation strategies adopted for different cultural information words in folktales from aspects of semantics correspondence,cultural compensation and aesthetic optimization,so as to deliver the exact cultural meaning of the original language.The study shows that when translating words containing historical,regional and socio-cultural information,the translation can be semantically-considered and meaning-oriented by adopting strategies of transliteration and literal translation;when translating the words that differ from the cultural mentality of the target readers,the translation can be considered pragmatically by means of explanation,substitution and discoloration to achieve better cultural exchange;when translating the words that follow the style of author,the translation can be aiming to provide readers a better aesthetic experience by optimizing the content,rhyme or style.The study also points out that analyzing the translation of folktales from the perspective of culture translation theory is instructive and practical,which can provide certain reference value for future scholars to further study the translation of folktales. |
