| With China’s growing demand to build a country with great transportation strength,Sino-western technological communication in the aviation industry is becoming increasingly frequent and the popularization of aviation texts plays an important role in this process.Proposed by Vermeer in 1978,Skopos Theory argues that the most important factor in translation is its purpose.According to this theory, translators should follow three basic rules in conducting a translation activity, which are respectively the skopos rule, the coherence rule, and the fidelity rule. With the guidance of this theory and with the entrustment of Shandong Huihuang International Logistics Development Co.,Ltd,the author of this report fulfilled the task of translating Chapter 9 of the English book Practical Airport Operations,Safety, and Emergency Management into Chinese. The report falls into six chapters.Chapter One introduces the background of the task, the significance of the task, and the organization of the report.Chapter Two makes a description of the source text, including its structure, main ideas, and linguistic features.Chapter Three presents the task process, which includes pre-translation preparations,while-translation challenges, and post-translation revisions. As the theoretical underpinning of the report,Chapter Four focuses on Skopos Theory and its applicability to the task.Chapter Five makes case analyses of the translation techniques used during the fulfillment of the task with the guidance of Skopos Theory.Specifically, the translation techniques on the lexical level include word-class conversion, amplification and omission, the translation techniques on the syntactic level involve voice conversion, division and reconstructing, and the translation techniques on the textual level include cohesive-device adjustment and coherence complement. As the summary of the report,Chapter Six takes stock of the translation techniques employed in fulfilling the task and makes reflections upon the author’s pains and gains from it. |
